Garage Door Panel Replacement
After an overnight freeze the door stuck to the slab, the opener strained, and something gave.
In plain words
The first real decision is whether a section is the right scale of repair. A shallow dent in the middle of a steel skin can often be worked out or filled and painted. A crease that reaches a joint, an end stile or a hinge point changes how the section carries load and is usually a section replacement. Damage spread over several sections, widespread rust, or a door whose design is no longer made pushes the conversation toward a new door. Panel replacement sits in the middle of that range, and a good assessment places your door on it honestly before anything is ordered.
How the visit goesFrom outside, the horizontal groove between two sections now steps sideways by a centimetre. One section has shifted on its hinges after a roller jumped the track, and on the way down the door catches at exactly that point.

How the visit goes

Is a matching section still made?
Once the door is identified, the technician contacts the manufacturer or distributor to confirm that a section for that model, position and size can still be supplied, and in which colours. Door designs change over the years: embossing patterns, joint profiles and section heights get revised, and colours are retired. If the exact section is current, the order is straightforward. If the design has been discontinued, the conversation turns to the nearest current match and what the visual difference would be, or to replacing the door as a whole. The lead time for a made-to-order section is confirmed at the same time so you can plan.
Fitting the new section into the door
The new section is lifted into the gap, its rollers guided into the tracks and its joint mated to the section below so the two profiles nest. Hinges go on according to the number stamped on them: each position in the door uses a different hinge offset, which places the roller progressively further from the door face so the upper sections follow the curve of the track. New self-tapping screws are driven into the stiles at the factory hole positions, a strut is bolted across if the section calls for one, and the technician confirms the section sits flat and the joint above closes tight.
Hinges, rollers and a monthly minute
The new hinges and rollers benefit from the same light care as the rest of the door. Once a month, with the door closed, glance along the hinges for a screw that has backed out and give the rollers a spin to feel for roughness. Twice a year, put a small amount of garage-door lubricant on the hinge pivots, roller stems and bearing plates, wiping off the excess so it does not gather dust. Springs can take a light film too. Tracks should stay dry and clean rather than greased, since grease there collects grit and makes the rollers skate.

What affects the quote
Door width and section size
A section for a double door is nearly twice the length of one for a single door, with more steel, more hinges and a heavier lift. Section height and thickness feed into the same line.
Opener adjustments afterwards
Resetting the opener's limits and force and testing the safety reversal is part of finishing the job. Where the opener arm bracket or a worn trolley needs replacing as well, that hardware is listed.
Special-order handling and freight
Made-to-order sections travel from the factory or distributor, and a long or glazed section needs careful handling in transit. Freight and order handling are shown as their own line rather than folded into labour.
What to have ready
- Would you consider a whole new door if a matching section is unavailable?
- Roughly how wide and how tall is the door?
- Are any hinges, rollers or cables visibly bent, loose or hanging?
Garage Door Panel Replacement: questions
QuestionsWhat information or photos help before the visit?
A photograph of the whole door from outside, a close-up of the damaged section, a picture of the manufacturer's label if you can find it, and a shot of the inside of the door showing the hinges, tracks and springs. Add the door's approximate width and height, whether it is insulated, its colour and panel style, and how the damage happened. That set often lets the technician confirm availability before arriving.
What is a strut, and does a new section need one?
A strut is a horizontal steel stiffener fastened across the inside of a section to keep it from bowing. Wide doors, top sections where the opener arm pulls, and bottom sections that take knocks are the usual places for them. If your damaged section had a strut, the new one gets a straight strut refitted or replaced. If a top section bowed because it never had one, adding a strut is part of putting it right.
Can a dent be repaired instead of replacing the section?
Sometimes. A shallow dent in the middle of a steel skin, away from joints and hinge points, can often be eased out or filled, sanded and painted. Damage that creases the metal, reaches a joint or an end stile, bends a hinge point, or kinks a strut affects how the section carries load as the door moves, and a new section is the sound repair there. The technician tells you which category your dent falls into.
